The brain is known to contain billions of neurons that serve a multiple of functions, neurons are the cells that convey information through the body. According to a new study, math neurons have been discovered in the human brain.
This study was conducted by the universities of Tubingen and Bonn, they discovered that the brain contains neurons that fire up only during specific mathematical processes. (https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/320289)
Scientists have discovered that when people do math, certain neurons in the brain fire up. The right side of the brain controls human emotion and creativity, while the left side is responsible for analysis and calculations, certain neurons are only activated during addition while others are active during subtraction.
The study's researchers, used numerous human participants who had a device implanted in a specific section of their brain, to record the activity of their nerve cells, they examined four men and five women and implanted electrodes into the temporal lobes of their brains. The electrodes recorded the activity of the cells of the participants as they performed simple calculations.
"We discovered that distinct neurons fired during additions than during subtractions" said by the University Hospital Bonn- co-author Florian Mormann.
The researchers also made an unexpected discovery in the "Parahippocampal cortex" which is located at the intersection of our brain memory function and high level visual processing areas. While the neurons used for addition and subtraction had the same distinction, the researchers
