NCR cannot yet be classified as Alert Level 4 despite having high number of infections, Palace says
SAMANTHA NICOLE IRENEO
Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said on Monday, January 10, that the National Capital Region (NCR) does not meet the requirements to be placed under Alert Level 4 despite the recent increase of COVID-19 cases.

The NCR is currently placed under alert level 3 until January 15.

Nograles, also the acting presidential spokesman, stated that the government is monitoring the two-week growth rate (TWGR), the average daily attack rate (ADAR), and total bed utilization to assess whether the current alert level should be increased.

ADAR refers to the average number of new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 individuals.

“We are actively monitoring all of the metrics and parameters na dapat nating tingnan (that we should look into) and even over and above that. As of the moment, hindi pa po siya tumatama doon sa tatlong metrics natin (the region is not hitting the three metrics) enough for it to declare Alert Level 4,” Nograles said on ANC’s Opening.

Nograles also explained that despite Metro Manila’s high TWGR and ADAR, the total bed utilization rate still falls short of alert level 4 metrics.

According to independent pandemic monitor Octa Research, Metro Manila's one-week growth rate from January 2-8 was 785%, while the ADAR is 59.81%.

“But immediately, ‘pag tumama po ‘yan (if it is reached), we will not hesitate to declare Alert Level 4 in any area, or escalate any area to Alert Level 3,” Nograles says to assure the public.

35% of Filipino complete vaccination against COVID-19;
561k receives booster shots
SAMANTHA NICOLE IRENEO
38.7 million Filipinos have already completed their vaccination against COVID-19 during the nine months since the government started its vaccination campaign.
This is equal to 35.49% of the population, not even half of the 90% that the health experts indicate must be fully immunized to obtain herd immunity throughout the country.
Of all of the fully vaccinated, about 561,135 — 0.51% of the total population — have received booster shots, according to the Department of Health figures as of December 6.
Meanwhile, an additional 53.49%, or 49.06%, of Filipinos received the first dose of the two-dose procedure.
Almost half of these shots — 259,504 — were distributed in Metro Manila. The latest DOH figures show that 67.8% of the population of the capital region have already been fully immunized.
The distribution of booster doses for the elderly, healthcare workers and people with weakened immune systems began last month, but was not rolled out to eligible adults until last week.
Its first operation, which was carried out from November 30 to December 2, saw the vaccination of eight million people, less than the nine million initially targeted by the officials.

Pacquiao declared as presidential bid for 2022
SAMANTHA IRENEO
Senator Manny Pacquiao was declared as PDP-Laban presidential candidate for the upcoming 2022 national elections during the National Assembly of his wing, led by him and Senator Koko Pimentel in Libis, Quezon City.
The Assembly took place almost two weeks after the PDP-Laban wing, which was led by Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi, who nominated Senator Bong Go and President Rodrigo Duterte as presidential and vice-presidential candidates for their group.
As the event began, Pimentel said “Exciting ito dahil malaki ang posibilidad na mananalo tayo sa darating na halalan at ang tunay na PDP-Laban ang magpapatakbo ng ating gobyerno,".
Pacquiao aims to "take the challenge of leadership" so he could introduce actual reforms that would improve the lives of many Filipinos, especially the poor, as people complained they were already sick and tired of broken promises.
The National Assembly of Pacquiao's Camp occurred amid struggles within the PDP-Laban: one group was led by the senate and another by Cusi. Both sides insist that the other group, and the other wing's events, are illegitimate.
However, amid power struggles, one question still remains: who is the "legitimate" PDP-Laban.
